Kieran Trippier has explained his mindset at the start of arguably the biggest season of his career so far in 2017-18 - a season that ended with Champions League football secured again and a place in England’s World Cup squad.
The flying full-back signed off 2016-17 in style. The squad was on a post-season tour of Hong Kong in late May when news came through of his first call-up into the England squad - and he made his debut against France in June last year.
Kyle Walker then departed for City, leaving ‘Trips’ to battle it out with new arrival Serge Aurier in 2017-18.
Having featured 22 times in all competitions in 2016-17, Kieran stepped up to 35 appearances in 2017-18, added four more England caps and is now tipped by many as a potential starter for the Three Lions in the World Cup after a tactical reshuffle saw Gareth Southgate shift to three at the back with Kyle Walker one of that back three.

How did Kieran feel at the start of the campaign? “I knew I needed to put my foot down and make that spot my own,” he said. “My mindset was to try to play week in, week out and when Kyle left it was about getting my head down, getting a good pre-season under my belt and trying to make that spot my own.
“Serge came in, I knew all about him and what he’s all about as a player, an excellent footballer, and you need that competition.
“You don’t want to think you are just playing week in, week out because that’s when standards can drop.
“At this Club you need to make sure your standards are high every day and the manager demands that.
“So when Serge came in it was a motivation for me and I don’t want to leave Kyle Walker-Peters out of this either, he’s been excellent, has a great attitude and a great future.

“You need competition and if you look around our squad there is competition all around the place and Serge, plus Kyle, is no different.
“We have a great relationship as well, we try to encourage each other and try to do our best for the team.
“Everyone gets on with each other, there are no egos in the dressing room, everyone gets on and everyone is close. That’s most important, the spirit and bond of the team."
